ST/EM Traveled to Vinton to take on Vinton-Shellsburg on Monday in a 4:30 match time start. ST/EM started the game with Hanna Keckler in goal, Cynthia Lares, Hailee Weiss, Sadie Kavalier, and Ericka Dunning in defense, Araceli Angel, Kylee Hoskins, Mona Munez and Kloey Fairall in mid-field, with Dani Stubbs and Erin Fillioon as forwards. The weather was cool, with a brisk wind out of the east, and sunny.
ST/EM won the toss, and the game was on. For the first few minutes, both teams were trying to feel out each other, with the flow going up and down the field. Vinton slowly took control, and forced the action into the ST/EM end of play. ST/EM defense kept the action in front of them, but ST/EM could not force the action to the Vinton end. Vinton had 8 corners in the first half for none for ST/EM, again showing the game was in the ST/EM. Vinton scored in the 31st minute, after the ST/EM could not clear the ball out of trouble, and like a pinball, the ball kept bouncing around until Vinton finally got it into the back of the net. ST/EM tried to answer, and with 2 minutes to go in the half, Dani Stubbs had a solid shot but just missed the inside of the post and hit the net right at the post. And this is the way the half ended with Vinton holding a 1-0 lead.
ST/EM picked up their game and started to match up with Vinton better, and started to force the action into the Vinton end. Dani Stubbs had a couple more of shots on goal, as did Mona Nunex, Kristy Lasley and Sadie Kavalier with a run from the back. But again nothing to show for the effort. Vinton added a goal in the 68th minute. Hannah Keckler made a very good save on a hard shot but Vinton followed their shot and an easy putback gave them a 2-0 lead. Vinton added one more on almost the same play. The ST/EM made a good save by diving to stop the shot but the rebound was put back for a 3-0 final score. The last score came at the 75th minute.
The team play improved from the first half to the second, and the shot and shots on goal showed this effort. ST/EM had 14 shots while Vinton had 22, most of them coming in the first half. ST/EM started to make the thru passes and the give and go, something the team has been working on. This game could have been a 1-0 game either way. The girls played hard and were in the game until the very end. They worked hard and in the second half took the fight to the Vinton team. I am very proud of the effort that the team displayed tonight. The subs contributed to the effort as well, Courtney Ceaser, Abby Llewellyn, Socorro Mendoza, Kristi Lasley, Anna Jensen and Jocelyne Veliz all contributed to the effort on this evening.
