Ray Young Bear is college speaker

May 12, 2014
Toledo Chronicle, Tama News-Herald

Ray Young Bear, a Meskwaki poet, recently was guest speaker for Scott Community College in Davenport, Iowa. His reading and performance was made possible by Davenport SCENE, a multi-agency partnership that includes Eastern Iowa Community Colleges, Figge Museum, and Davenport Public Library.

To date, Ray has written five books--three in poetry and two in fiction. He's presently at work on a comprehensive study guide on his previous books to soon be published as electronic-books.

"Essentially, it was a good time to share new poems and to acquaint students with the cultural-based parallels between contemporary and traditional Native American /Meskwaki literature."

In addition to talking about creative writing experiences, Ray read new poems and sang tribal word-songs from Manifestation Wolverine. His songs were shared recently by a student on youtube and the video was reposted by the University of Iowa in iowareview.tumblr.com. The English translations to the song "Hi Ho Silver" were published in the Iowa Review in 2008.
