The eyes can have it - so can the lips - that's what is accomplished at Skin Deep, a newly offered procedure here by Sandy Bartling at the Cut Loose Salon in Tama.
Sandy recently completed a course in tattooing in Texas which taught what is perhaps a step away from the traditional vision of tattooing.
She is performing permanent makeup tattooing specializing in eyebrows, eyeliners and lips.
Sandy said last week the procedures are suitable for anyone and have amazing results.
She said she witnessed one woman cry after having her eyebrows permanently tattooed. The woman had no eyebrows and had drawn them with the traditional eyebrow pencil for years.
The procedures take about one and one half hours and involve either use of a hand tool or a machine.
The eye brows have hair strokes while there is lining or full coloring for lips.
Special permanent makeup ink is used.
The specialized tattoo is thought to be rooted in procedures first developed to enhance reconstructive surgery.
With the course work in Texas, Sandy practiced the skill first on craft sheets then on live models.
She is now licensed in Iowa and holds the certificates required for her shop area at Cut Loose.
Sandy Bartling said she was first approached by Julie Chyma, Cut Loose owner, with the tattoo business proposal.
"I thought she had lost her mind, at first," Sandy said,
But her background - she went to college for commercial art - has designed clothing and is often called upon for design work by friends (years ago she designed the Cut Loose business sign) - sparked her interest.
There was also "free time" with Sandy having worked almost 30 years at the Iowa Juvenile Home / State Training School for Girls in Toledo which was closed earlier this year.
Sandy said she may seek additional training in the future for body art- type tattooing, was well.
Sandy is available for appointments Monday-Friday and Saturday mornings and can be contacted ta Cut Loose- 641-484-5559 or 641-750-0766.
