ST/EM traveled to Marshalltown on Friday to take on the Bobcats. It was a freshmen game first followed by JV and Varsity at 7:30.
ST/EM started the game with Hanna Keckler in goal, Sam Earley, Hailee Weiss, Sadie Kavalier, and Ericka Dunning in defense, Araceli Angel, Kylee Hoskins, Dani Stubbs and Cynthia Lares in mid-field, with Mona Munez and Erin Filloon as forwards. The weather was just about perfect with temps in the upper 60's and a light west wind.
The game started with ST/EM defending the West end of the field. Marshalltown took the opening kickoff and the game was on. For the first few minutes the teams were feeling each other out, and played in the middle of the field.
Marshalltown used their speed up front and broke thru the ST/EM defense for a one vs one and Marshalltown was on the board first at the 5 minute mark, and followed it up with a second goal a minute later. At the 9 minute mark Marshalltown added a third goal.
ST/EM made some adjustments and even had a couple of good attacks, but nothing to show for it. In the 25th minute, Marshalltown made it 4-0 off a quick counter-attack. ST/EM could not get re-organized, and Marshalltown score two more goals in the next 2 minutes for a 6-0 lead, and added one more before half time for a 7-0 lead.
The second half started the same way, with Marshalltown scoring a goal 2 minutes into the second half off a corner. ST/EM just did not have an answer on the evening. ST/EM held off Marshalltown for the next 30 minutes, but Marshalltown got the 9 and 10th goal at the 76th minute of the game to end the game.
This was a tough game for the ST/EM team, and they knew it was going to be. Marshalltown was just quicker up front and the passing for Marshalltown was sharp and crisp. ST/EM at times had this, but could not keep it up. ST/EM challenged every free ball and won their share, but the one on one challenges Marshalltown had the advantage.
The game was played hard but very clean. There was only 3-4 fouls on both teams for the whole evening.
Hannah Keckler played a good game in goal, even with the final score. She made some very good saves to keep the team in the game for as long as possible. The defense also made some good stops of shots and runs.
The subs for ST/EM, Abby Llewellyn, Anna Jensen, Socorro Mendoza, and Serena Lowe contributed to the effort. This game showed the difference in the programs, from an experience point of view. ST/EM players average less than 2 years of experience on the pitch while I am sure Marshalltown averaged 7-8. ST/EM program is growing, and we will get to next level.
The Freshmen game went in favor of Marshalltown by a 5-0 score, with the JV match being a 11-0 score again in favor of Marshalltown.
The next ST/EM game is Thursday, May 1, when they host Hudson in a 4:30 start, for the Varsity match.
