The South Tama County Girls Tennis Team traveled to Urbandale on Saturday, April 19 and very nearly nabbed the team championship at the North Polk Invite. Trailing the host team by just half a point in the end, the Trojans saw their season take a turn for the better while posting several key wins. Final team standings: 1. North Polk 16 pts, 2. South Tama 15.5 pts, 3. Saydel 13 pts, 4. Des Moines East 1.5 pts.
Madison Baack and Emily Martin teamed to dominate the doubles contest as they ended their day undefeated. Competing as the #1 Seeds, the STC Seniors did not disappoint. In the first round, Baack/Martin crushed Babeuhouse/Gustafson of Saydel by a score of 10-1. In round two, the talented duo outclassed Merkle/Schultz from North Polk by a score of 10-0. In the finals, Baack/Martin downed Madsen/Nelson of North Polk 10-7 to win the doubles championship.
Senior Tori Appelgate proved she was a force to be reckoned with in the singles side of the tournament. Facing Jenae Kaster of Des Moines East in the first round, Appelgate used her experience to control the match against the freshman in route to a 10-1 win. Next, Appelgate faced the #1 Seed from North Polk Mallory Aves. Appelgate frustrated her opponent early with a consistent ground game. She built a 6-4 lead going late into the match. Aves roared back to nab the next four games to lead by two.

Appelgate steadied herself to get closer, but fell by a score of 8-10 in a match worthy of a final. In her last match, Appelgate showed her quality in a 10-2 pasting of Mackenzie Miller of Saydel to place third and earn a medal.
The duo of Taylor Muhlstein and Sydney Meek continue to grow as a team. They posted a 2-1 record on the day. In the opening round, they fell to the #3 Seeded Team of Madsen/Nelson from North Polk 8-10. They next faced Des Moines East. Muhlstein/Meek posted a 10-3 win for the Trojans. The duo from STC matched up against Babeuhouse/Gustafson of Saydel in their last match. Trailing 1-5, Muhlstein/Meek raced back to even things at 5-5. The two teams kept pace to get to 8-8. Trading service breaks, the Trojans continued to come back from behind in order to keep the match going. At 10-10, a tiebreaker was played. Muhlstein/Meek took charge to win the tiebreaker 7-3. In the end the two from South Tama won 11-10 (3) to land in 5th Place.
Caitlin Svacina took the court as the second singles entry for South Tama. In the first round, she faced the #2 Seed Sydney Samples from Saydel. Svacina played valiantly, but in the end fell by a score of 5-10. In the next round, she matched up against McClaine Gail of North Polk. Leading 5-2, Svacina saw Gail fight back to knot things at 5-5. A footwear issue caused some discomfort for Svacina late in the match. Playing on, she got to 7-8 before seeing her opponent grab a 7-10 win. In her final match, Svacina defeated Des Moines East's Ashley Weinman by a lopsided score of 10-0 to nab 7th Place.
