MARION - The STC boys soccer team played in the Linn-Mar Challenger Cup Tournament on Saturday April 12. "We traditionally participate in this tournament, and usually get similar type of results. We use this playing time in attempt to find our game and learn from the bigger programs. We have talent, but we need to learn some very important things, to name a few: discipline, professional approach, level of intensity and concentration", state coach Dima Shklyarov.
South Tama took the following players to the tournament: Luis Perez, Francisco Rivera, Julio Cesar Martinez, Santiago Villafana, Marcos Nunez, Ruben Fuentes, Jerry Lowe, Alex Martinez, James Lares, Lansana Mohr, Adrian Castanon, Victor Chavez, Elias Garcia, John Corral and Andres Rodriguez.
Up first for the Trojans was North Scott who outscored the Trojans 3-2. "After losing the first half of the first game 0-3 to the North Scott, the Trojans completely turned the game around in the second half. Adrian Castanon and Lansana Mohr materialized the pressure amounted by the South Tama team into dangerous moments, forcing two penalty kicks. First one had been scored by Castanon, the second one, shot by James Lares, had been deflected by the goalkeeper. Nonetheless I am glad that James had a chance to make this kick. Yes this time nerves took the best of him, but I bet he got it out of his system. Next time it will be better", said Shklyarov.
The Trojans then played Muscatine to who they fell 9-0. "In the second game Trojans competed against the Muscatine Warriors, who proved one more time that they are too much for the current South Tama squad. Uncontested defeat 0-9. Most of Trojans put up a good fight, and were successful in some micro-duels, but on the bigger picture, we were basically overwhelmed", stated Shyklyarov.
"We are looking forward to compete against Gladbrook and Grinnell this week seeking for the first victory this season. I believe this is doable", said Shklyarov.
