Iowa Brass quintent at Wieting Monday, April 21

Let the trumpets sound.as well as a trombone, a horn, and a tuba!! The Iowa Brass Quintet, or IBQ, is the next event of the Wieting Theatre and Opera House's Inaugural Fine Arts series. They will take the stage on Monday, April 21, at 7:00 p.m.

The Iowa Brass Quintet was first formed as a resident faculty ensemble at the University of Iowa in the early 1960's. Four of the five performers are university professors from the UI School of Music. The fifth member is a doctoral candidate. The group performs on the UI campus each semester as well as community concert associations throughout the Midwest. The IBQ makes outreach part of their mission by performing concerts for many elementary and junior high schools in Iowa and Illinois. Leading regional and national music educators' and composers' conferences have been venues for the quintet as well.

According to the IBQ's website, "The IBQ has been committed to the performance and promotion of new music for brass quintet." The group has recorded on several record labels and have premiered work by other brass musicians. "American: A University of Iowa Celebration" is the IBQ's most recent CD. The CD features music composed by faculty and students who have been associated with the UI School of Music to celebrate the University of Iowa's Sesquicentennial.

All five performers have extensive resumes and accomplishments. They are Amy Schendel, Assistant Professor of Trumpet; Doctoral Candidate Laura Saylor, trumpet; Jeffrey Agrell, horn, Associate Professor; David Grier, trombone, Professor and Collegiate Scholar; and John Manning, tuba, Associate Professor of tuba and euphonium.

Individual tickets can be purchased at the door. Adults-$10.00 and students--$5.00

The Wieting Theatre and Opera House Fine Arts Series is part of the Wieting Theatre's mission to bring live performances to the community. The last two events in this years' series will be the University of Iowa PanAmerican Steel Drum Band on May 18 at 2:00 P.M. and Dr. Allen Huckleberry, June 14 at 1:00 p.m.
