Robert Edwin Gamble DVM, 89, died Saturday, April 14, 2014, at Grundy County Memorial Hospital in Grundy Center. A Celebration of Life will be held Tuesday, June 17, 2014, at 6:30 p.m. at the united Methodist Church of Gladbrook, Contact Overton Funeral Home, Traer, for further information.
Robert Edwin Gamble, son of James Merle and Lucille Arnold Gamble was born Jan. 31, 1925, on a farm near Coin, Iowa, where he lived until he joined the army. He graduated from Coin High School in May 1942, where he participated in sports, school plays and band. He was a WWII veteran, having served as a 2nd Lieutenant in Italy until being honorably discharged in February, 1947.
On Aug. 24, 1947, he and Martha Polsley were married in the Coin Methodist Episcopal Church.

He received his DVM degree from Iowa State College of Veterinary Medicine in June 1953. He practiced veterinary medicine in Tama and Marshall counties until multiple sclerosis forced him to retire, July 1, 1987. "Doc" loved his work.
He was active in numerous community organizations, finding great satisfaction in working with 4-H youth caring for their animals, frequently giving them a lesson in astronomy, as well. He had been a member of the Garwin Fire Department and Town Council and the Gladbrook Commercial Club. He was a long time leader in the Boy Scouts of America, a knowledgeable naturalist, fisherman, hunter, trapper and an avid gardener.
He was a member of the American Veterinary Medical Association, Iowa Veterinary Medical Association, United Methodist Church, American Legion, Masonic Lodge and a charter member of the Garwin Lions Club International.
He had lived at the Westbrook Acres Nursing Home in Gladbrook since 2009, where he received loving care and he thoroughly enjoyed the staff and other residents.
He died April 12, 2014 at the Grundy County Memorial Hospital. His body was donated to the University of Iowa Anatomy Department. It will be inured at the Polsley Cemetery near Yorktown, Iowa. His family has established a scholarship in his honor at the Iowa State College of Veterinary Medicine.
He is survived by his wife, Martha; their sons Ronald Lloyd Gamble (Faye Stoner), Kris Allen (Kay) Gamble and Clark Robert (Cheryl) Gamble; their grandchildren Eric Ray Gamble, Sherri Lyn Gamble, Connor Bryce Gamble and Alexandra Gillian Gamble; one sister Alice Cavner; three sisters-in-law Jean Armstrong, Lois Sullivan and Jean Polsley; several nieces, nephews, cousins and his faithful caregiver and friend, Carlton "Bud" Locke.
In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts will be given to the Mid-Iowa Council Boy Scouts of America.
