It turned out to be a case of "Better to exercise caution than take a chance."

Toledo Police Chief Bob Kendall said the report of a person carrying a rifle on South Church Street on Sunday night, April 6, turned out to be true.

After being summoned to speak to a witness at 9:13 p.m., Toledo Police Officer Dan Quigley requested a CodeRED?alert be issued for Toledo informing residents of a possible armed person and "to lock their doors and be on the lookout" for a possible suspect.

Quigley was assisted by the Tama and Meskwaki Nation police departments and the Tama County Sheriff's Office and conducted what was described as an "exhaustive search of the area."

At 12:53 a.m. a second CodeRED?alert was issued which stated "It was believed at that time there was no credible thereat to the community" but said no one had been located.

It turned out two days later, there was no threat as a person's car had broken down in the 600 block of that street and he did not want to leave his uncased weapon in the vehicle.

This information came to Toledo Police from Tama County Sheriff Dennis Kucera. A man came to the sheriff's office late in the afternoon on April 8 after a third party had informed him of the circumstances. The man was not identified.

He admitted transporting the gun down Church Street to College

Street and then west to his residence on South Main Street.

Kendall said Kucera confirmed the man had a valid gun permit and "was authorized to possess and carry the rifle."

Residents in all of Tama County except the City of Tama can sign up for the telephone alerts by going to the Tama County Emergency Management website or calling 641-484-3760.

The City of Tama does not participate in the program. A per capita fee is assessed annually for the service.
