April 11, 2014
By Julie Shook - Library Director , Toledo Chronicle, Tama News-Herald

Early Closure:

The Louise and Lucile Hink/Tama Public Library will be closing early at 5:00 PM on Thursday April 24th for staff training. The library staff will be learning more about e-books and e-book readers that are used with our downloadable e-books and audio books through our consortium of libraries called NEIBORS. NEIBORS stands for North Eastern Iowa Bridge to Online Resource.

The libraries that belong to NEIBORS pay an annual subscription fee so that our patrons can access these e-books and audio books FREE.

t is our hope that once we have completed training we will be better able to answer questions our patrons have concerning this technology.

The training is being provided free of charge for library personnel by Iowa Library Services, Central District's consultant Maryann Mori.

National Library Week: April 13-19

National Library Week will be April 13th through the 19th this year. We are celebrating by kicking off our 2014 Summer Reading Program Registration.

This year's program theme is "Fizz, Boom, Read". Registration forms are available at the library and will be handed out at the elementary school. As a reward for signing up early, everyone that returns their registration form during National Library Week will win a small prize! Book bags, pencils and log sheets will also be given out when you register.

The last day to sign up for summer reading will be Friday June 6th, 2014. If you do not have your form returned to the library before June 7, you will not be able to attend.

Don't miss the fun; register early, and what better time than during National Library Week?

Program dates are, for (grade in fall) 1st grade and up Tuesday June 10, 17, 24, and July 1st at 1:30 PM and (grade in fall) Preschool and Kindergarten-Thursday June 12, 19, 26, and July 3rd at 1:30PM. Prize day will be Tuesday August 5th.

Children should start keeping their reading logs on June 1st. Log sheets must be turned in before August 1st. For each hour read, kids receive one sticker and one prize. After 10 hours are read, kids earn a free book, (2 books total per child), plus a chance to win the Grand Prize! Remember to keep reading all of June and July.

If an adult reads to a child or children it counts for each child. If a child reads to other children, they all get credit. Children are not required to attend the weekly program but we encourage them to come join in the fun. Kids should dress in play clothes-we plan to play and have fun. Programs begin at the library and move over to the Civic Center.

Each program that a child attends will earn them an entrance into the drawings for special prizes to be given away each week. Only kids attending programs will be included in the special drawings.

A number of T-shirts will be given away this year by random drawings from those present at programs. There will be a guessing jar again this year. Each day a child comes to the library during June and July they can guess.

Closest guess wins the prize. Prizes will be awarded on Prize day in August. If you have any questions concerning any part of the summer reading program, please call the library at 484-4484.

Once again this year we will be taking pictures that will be published in the newspaper, on our website and on our Facebook page. There will be NO computer use on Summer Reading days until 4:00PM.

No Log sheets will be received for prizes on summer reading days before programs or after programs until 4:00PM.

Anyone wishing to check out materials must present their own library card or picture ID.

Celebrate Science this summer at the Tama Library!
