The Wieting Theatre and Opera House kicks off its inaugural Fine Arts Performance Series with a dance troupe from the University of Iowa, Sunday, March 9, at 2 p.m. Dancers In Company is the touring repertory dance company of the Department of Dance. The company is directed by University of Iowa Faculty Charlotte Adams and consists of 12 undergraduate and graduate students who tour throughout Iowa and the Midwest from March to June each year, performing live concerts and lecture demonstrations for audiences of all ages.
The dance company will hold a Master's Class in ballet and modern dance for area dance students 3rd grade and up from 11 a.m. to noon at the theatre. Space is limited to 20 students, and it will be first come first served. The cost of the Master's Class will be $15, which includes a ticket to the performance. Some students will have an opportunity to come on stage and help illustrate choreographic concepts during the lecture portion of the performance that begins at 2 p.m. Denise Fletcher, Guild President, will be in charge of signing students up for this event. Please contact her at 641-484-5305.
Series tickets can still be purchased for $30 for adults and $15 for students until and including the day of Dancers In Company performance. After that individual tickets can be purchased only. Remaining tickets for each concert will vary in price from $10 to $12 for Adults and Students will be half of those prices. Part of the Wieting Theatre and Opera House's mission is to bring live performances to the area. By buying a series package, adult tickets are only $7.50. Where else can someone enjoy great performance art at such a low price?
The three remaining events all come from the University of Iowa as well. They are the following:
The Iowa Brass Quintet will perform on Monday, April 21, at 7 p.m. A Master Class consisting of select area high school students will have the opportunity to participate in a Master Class at 4 p.m. before the evening performance.
The Pan American Steel Drum Band concert is Sunday, May, 18, at 2 p.m.
A lecture and piano recital will be offered by Alan Huckleberry.
In addition, he will conduct a Master Class with regional piano students, also in advance of his program. Huckleberry's performance date is June 13 and 14. The Master Class time is yet TBD.
