UPDATE:Bond set at $1 million in Jefferson murder

UPDATE: 1 p.m., Tuesday, 2-25: Bond was set at $1 million cash for Johnathan Curtis Youngbear, 20, who faces 1st degree murder charge in the death of Severn Daniel Jefferson, age 17. Magistrate Richard Vander Mey set the bail amount during an initial appearance by Youngbear this morning. According to a criminal complaint filed by Meskwaki Nation Tribal Police Detective Craig Karr, Youngbear is accused of stabbing Jefferson in the chest. The complaint states Youngbear and Jefferson had an argument after they along with others had been drinking and smoking meth over a period of about a day and a half. The complaint claims Youngbear came up behind Jefferson who was seated on a couch and Youngbear put his fingers to his mouth to indicate "shhh" and then proceeded to stab Jefferson.The alleged stabbing occurred on the Meskwaki Settlement shortly before 5 p.m. on Monday, Feb. 24. A preliminary hearing was set for March 7 at 9 a.m.

UPDATE: 9 a.m. Tuesday, 2-25: First degree murder charges have been filed against Jonathan Curtis Youngbear, 20, in the stabbing death of Severn Daniel Jefferson, 17, on the Meskwaki Settlement on Monday afternoon.

Youngbear was taken into custody following the discovery of Jefferson's body and is being held in the Tama County Jail in Toeldo according to the Division of Criminal Investigation.

UPDATE- 9:45 p.m. 02-24-14- The name of a victim apparently stabbed to death this afternoon on the Meskwaki Settlement southwest of Tama is being withheld Rick Rahn, an Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation special agent said at a 9:40 p.m. news conference tonight. He said a person is in custody in the case and the FBI, DCI, Meskwaki Nation Tribal Police and the Tama County Attorney's Office are investigating. He said the name of the victim is being withheld pending notification of next of kin. He also did not release the name of the person in custody and that officers are treating this as an isolated inicdnet.

Rahn said the Tama County Dispatch Center received a 911 call at 4:52 p.m. reporting a stabbing at 1695 340th Street. A person was found unresponsive ta the scene by officers. He said Meskwaki Nation Tribal Police, Tama county Sheriff's officers and Toledo Police initially responded to the scene.

EARLIER:Meskwaki Nation Tribal Police called the Federal Bureau of Investigation and Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation shortly after 5 p.m. today (Monday, Feb. 24) for what radio traffic called a possible homicide. The location is the 1600 block of 340th Street southwest of Tama. A Tama ambulance was dispatched to the scene after an initial report of a stabbing - this about 5 p.m. The ambulance since returned to Tama. No other details were immediately available.
