Ninth grade girls end season at 11-3

February 25, 2014
Coach Chelsea Ahrens , Toledo Chronicle, Tama News-Herald

The 9th Grade girls' basketball team ended their season on Thursday Feb. 6th at South Hardin. The Trojans lost a close game 24-22 and were limited to just 4 points in the second half and shot 10 for 31 for the game. South Hardin's pesky half court defensive trap forced a lot of Trojan turnovers throughout the game. Serena Lowe led the Trojan scoring with 8 points and Abby Llewellyn had 5 points.

After a long Christmas Break, the Trojans began their second half of the season with a win of 33-29 against West Marshall on January 14th. South Tama faced off against West Marshall's JV team and was able to come out with a victory after a very physical game. Minnie Climer led the Trojans with 9 points with Lowe & Llewellyn chipping in 8 a piece.

On Jan. 21st the girls faced off against Grundy Center at home and won their sixth game in row with a 35-29 victory. Llewellyn once again led the Trojans with 10 points and Climer and Lowe each added 9 points. On Jan. 23rd the girls traveled to Vinton to face off against the Vikings and ended up winning big 42-14. Climer, Lowe, and Llewellyn each scored in double figures. Kaitlin Berger added nine rebounds.

On Jan. 24th STC battled against East Marshall at home and came out with another big victory 48-16. Shae Slaven led all scorers with 12 points and Lowe added 10. After a long six day break, the Trojans traveled to Waterloo West in a rematch from Dec. 5th. Once again the Trojans were too much for the bigger school and won 41-2. South Tama's defense limited Waterloo to only 2 points, both points scored on separate free throw attempts. "Although it was another one-sided victory, this game allowed our girls that have not gotten a lot of playing time this year to get some valuable game experience. It was nice to see those girls get in there and be rewarded for all their hard work this year," added Coach Ahrens.

On Jan. 31st the girls traveled to AGWSR and ended up playing their team made up of mostly juniors and sophomores. "Although the Trojans lost the game 34-16, they put up an excellent effort against upper class men. I was really proud of how hard the girls played and fought even though Ackley was playing a lot their varsity players," said Coach Ahrens. On the Trojans second to last game, they ended up winning a great game at home against

Boone 32-20. What started out as a close game, soon turned in favor of the Trojans who used great defense and rebounding to win the game. Climer led the scorers with 9 points with Lowe and Berger added 6 each.

"Overall we had a great season on the freshman team. This team had only 1 win all of last year as 8th graders and the girls put in a lot of extra time this summer and improved as basketball players. I am very proud of how hard all of these girls worked in the long season. There is a lot of talent still left in the Trojans girl's basketball program and I wouldn't be surprised to see another Conference Championship for South Tama in the near future," said Coach Ahrens.

The 9th grade roster consists of: Brycelyn Haughey, Lauren Yuska, Shae Slaven, Kaitlin Berger, Allison Yuska, Shayla Peshel, Jordyn Thompson, Minnie Climer, Nyana Eubanks, Abby Llewellyn, Serena Lowe, Mikaila Collier, Mallory Thede, and managers Sabrina Holtz, Ellie Cervantes, and Carina Chavarria.
