Esterlene “Keshena” Anne Roberts

Esterlene "Keshena" Anne Roberts, 36, of Tama, passed away Thursday, Feb. 20, 2014, at the University of Iowa Hospitals & Clinics in Iowa City. Traditional Graveside Services will be held Sunday, Feb. 23, 2014 ,at 2:00 PM at the Meskwaki Cemetery on the Meskwaki Settlement in rural Tama. A Traditional Wake will be held Saturday evening, February 22, 2014 at the Native American Drum Society Round House on the Meskwaki Settlement in rural Tama.

Esterlene was born on August 7, 1977, in Green Bay, Wisconsin, the daughter of Isaac and Elizabeth J. (Wanatee) Roberts.

She graduated from South Tama High School and attended Flandreau Indian School in South Dakota. Keshena was previously a hotel clerk at the Meskwaki Bingo & Casino and was a bead worker. She enjoyed beading, loved being with her kids and extended family, traveling, singing and being a Facebook comedian.

Preceding her in death were two sisters, Norma Jean Roberts in 1982 and Marva Lisa Roberts in 2007; one brother, John Fitzgerald Roberts in 2007; a niece, Nora Wynd Moreno in 1995; her paternal grandparents, John and Nina (Youngbear) Roberts; maternal grandparents, Frank and Jean Adeline (Morgan) Wanatee; and her special friend, An wah be Thomas.

Survivors include her companion, Ty Bear of Tama; two daughters, Jewel of Tama and Dancia of Keshena, WI; three sons, James, Levi and Raphael of Tama; her parents, Isaac and Elizabeth J. Roberts of Tama; her grandmother, Alma Ward of Tama; two brothers, Troy Roberts of Tama and Dana (Skabin) Warrington of Keshena, WI; six sisters, Andrianne (Steve) Halverson of Marshalltown, Gina Kapayou of Toledo, Kelly Sam of Tama, Henrietta (Harlan) Brown of Tama, Mona (G) Roberts of Tama and Marian (Wasequi) Roberts of Tama; uncles, Donald (Priscilla) Wanatee, Darrel (Georgia) Wanatee and Frank Jr. (Miriam) Wanatee, all of Tama; aunts, Frances Salazar of West Des Moines, Marian (Elmer) Davenport and Carolyn (Eldon) Joy of Tama; several cousins, nieces and nephews.

Kruse-Phillips Funeral Home, Tama-Toledo is assisting the family with arrangements.
