On a snowy February Saturday, Class 2A District 5 wrestlers came together at Marion High School to determine who would be progressing on to State competition and who would be calling it a season. Mt. Vernon, Williamsburg, Solon, Tipton, Clear Creek-Amana, Marion, Union-Laporte City, Center Point-Urbana, Benton Community, East Marshall, South Tama and Vinton-Shellsburg were the participating teams.
It was a great day for South Tama wrestlers, Kolton Smith (170) and Dalton Vest (195), who both advanced to state individual competition at The Well by placing 2nd in Saturday's district rounds. Smith, who wrestles at 170, met first with Mitch Chapman of Tipton. Smith won by decision, 4-3, after three periods. Smith moved on to wrestle Trey Ryan of Mount Vernon. Ryan won by technical fall, 16-1, in the first period. The Trojan coaches and fans watched with anticipation as Chapman took out Joey Damro of Union, sending Smith to State as the runner-up.
Vest's (22-9) first match was with Cameron Ihrig (29-20) of Tipton. Vest defeated Ihrig, 4-3, advancing him on to wrestle Jace Hadacheck of Union. Hadacheck pinned Vest in the 2nd period, but with Vest's previous victory over Ihrig and another loss by Ihrig to Solon's Danny Whitmore, the door was open for Vest to wrestle back into 2nd place. Vest and Whitmore took to the mat and Vest came out on top, taking the runner up spot and advancing to state.
