Gerald W. “Jerry” Veit

Gerald W. "Jerry" Veit, 75, died Friday, Feb.14, 2014, at St. Luke's Hospital in Cedar Rapids following a short illness. A Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, Feb. 18, at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Chelsea with Rev. Michael Mescher, Celebrant with Deacon Joe Behounek assisting. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Visitation will be 4 - 7 p.m. Monday at the church. Hrabak Funeral Home is serving the family.

Gerald Wayne Veit was born Dec. 12, 1938, at the family farm in rural Chelsea to Paul and Ella (Cargin) Veit. Jerry attended Chelsea Public School through 12th grade graduating in 1957.

In August, 1962, he married Patricia Lee Behounek at St. Joseph's Church, Chelsea. To this union there are four children Amy (Rob) Gordon of Omaha, Nick (Amy) Veit of Marion, Gretchen (Alex) Sturgeon of Omaha and Andrew (Jenelle) Veit of Chelsea. He has seven grandchildren; Jacob, Tanner, Abigail, Lauren, Emerson, Vanessa and VinLee. He is also survived by his sister Debbie (John) Sheda of Independence.

Besides being a dad, Jerry spent time farming, working to install farm equipment and eventually opening his own Badger dealership. He also worked as an electrician, in construction and until 2010 was Chelsea's maintenance department for 20 plus years. During many of these years he also served on the Chelsea Volunteer Fire Department. After retiring he spent his time running parts and doing odd jobs for Andrew's automotive business.

He was preceded in death by his wife in 2010, his parents, his brother John, sister Carol and brother in law James Kaplan.
