No matter if the game is played at a high school gym in Central Iowa or at a professional arena across the country, it is always tough to play in someone else's house. This has remained true for the South Tama varsity boys basketball team. STC traveled twice late last week for two NICL west conference games. Their first game on the road was with South Hardin on Thursday Feb. 6.

Starting for STC was Darius Lasley, Tyler Martens, Grant Koch, Dalton Doyle and Ian Slagle. Starting for South Hardin were Sam Shindelar, David Shindelar, Eric Mulder, Andrew Wiechmann, and Glendon Mesch.

It was a tough night for the Trojans, as the closest the score was kept in the game was at 6:06 in the first quarter when both teams were tied at two points. At the bottom of the first quarter Slagle narrowed the Tiger lead to 14-10, but South Hardin would go on to score nine unanswered points and end the first quarter up 23-10. South Hardin went on to score nine unanswered points making the score at the end of the first Tigers 23, Trojans 10. The gap became greater at half with the Trojans down by 26 points, 50-24.

After halftime the Trojans continued to fight and outscored the Tigers 20-15 in the third quarter. However, it was not enough to close the already generous lead the Tigers built earlier in the game. The fourth quarter the teams were fairly evenly matched offensively with the Trojans scoring 14 and South Hardin scoring 15.

Lasley led in scoring for the Trojans with 19 followed by Clayton Rosenburger with 12, Drake Cherveny with 9, Slagle with 7, Doyle with 5, Damen Whitebreast with 3, Koch with 2 and Martens with 1.

The Tigers had a very spirited student section dressed in safari gear that cheered the South Hardin boys to a victory of 80-58.

On Friday Feb. 7 the Trojans found themselves in the BCLUW gym in Conrad. The BCLUW Comets have a NICL conference record of 3-9 while South Tama has three conference wins and seven conference losses.

Starting for STC were Tyler Martens, Grant Koch, Dalton Doyle, Clayton Rosenburger and Ian Slagle. Sophomore guard Darius Lasley, leading scorer for the Trojans, did not play. Starting for the Comets were Conner Ubben, Lane Custer, Cole Silver, Grant Frazer and Ben Neff. Four of the five starters for the BCLUW Comets were seniors while the only senior starting for the Trojans was Martens.

BCLUW featured a very tall front court with Frazer (6'4) and Neff (6'5) who challenged the Trojans all night under the basket. At halftime the Trojans were down 23-14. Doyle closed the gap slightly in the third with two three pointers early on. Ultimately the Trojans were not able to stop Ubben and the Comets as Ubben would lead all scorers with 20 of the Comets 67 points. The final score was 67-40 in favor of the Comets.

A highlight of the game for the Trojans was for two seniors. Martens scored his season high against BCLUW while Drake Cherveny tied his season high of nine points against South Hardin.

STC will meet both teams again within a matter of days as South Tama hosts South Hardin on Monday and BCLUW on Tuesday. The Trojans look to use their home court advantage this time around to even both series.
