Christine Draisey

Christine Draisey, 77, of Toledo, passed away Monday, Feb. 10, 2014 at Marshalltown Medical & Surgical Center. A Memorial Visitation will be held Friday, Feb. 14, from 5-7 p.m. at Kruse-PhillipsFuneral Home in Tama. Memorial Services and Interment will be private.

Christine was born on Feb. 16, 1936, in Battersea, London, England, the daughter of John "Les" Leslie and Dorothy Mabel (Allan-Caldwell) Brown.

Christine was a survivor of the London Blitz during World War II. She received her education at Grey Coat Hospital (grammar school) in Westminster, London and also at Eastbourne College of Education. She received her teaching certificate at London University and her B.A. in elementary education at University of Northern Iowa. Christine taught one year at Fleet Road Secondary School, Hampstead in London, England. On June 15, 1957, she was united in marriage to Edwin Draisey at Westminster Cathedral in London, England. After her marriage, they lived in Bingen, Germany, before settling in Iowa later that year. Christine taught 30 years at the South Tama Community School District, retiring in 1996.

Christine was an avid genealogist and got satisfaction from helping others research their family trees. She was a volunteer and on the board at the Tama Co. Historical & Genealogical Society. Christine was a member of the Iowa Genealogical Society and the Red Hat Society. She enjoyed flower gardening, bird watching, knitting, traveling, crosswords, her two cats, Bandit and Smokey and loved being with her large family.

Preceding her in death were her parents; her husband, Edwin in 2011; and her great-granddaughter, Olivia Jude Ikpe.

Survivors include her children, Teresa (Tom) Appelgate of West Palm Beach, Fla., Stephen (Kathy) Draisey of Raytown, Mo., David (Rhonda) Draisey of Toledo, Geoffrey (Kristin) Draisey of Mantorville, Minn.; her AFS "daughter", Dr. Maria Gonzalez of Santiago, Chile and her daughters, Florencia and Valentina Castro; 13 grandchildren, Whitney (special friend, Nate) and Lauren (special friend, John) Appelgate, Drew (fiance, Audrey), Stephany (special friend, Hilary), Jacob and Tony Draisey, Kelsey and Samantha Draisey, Ryan (Margo) Leafstedt, Katie Leafstedt (fianc, Nicholas), Brandon (Tiara) Draisey, Jerrod (Marcy) Draisey and Courtney (Adam) Martin; thirteen great-grandchildren; and one brother, Anthony Dudley Brown (special friend, Vera) of Spain.

Memorials may be directed to the Tama County Humane Society or the Alzheimer's Association.

Kruse-Phillips Funeral Home, Tama-Toledo, is assisting the family with arrangements.
