Area residents invited to IJH resolution event tonight

The Toledo City Council will meet tonight to approve a resolution supporting reopening of the Iowa Juvenile Home / State Training School for girls in Toledo. Members of the SAVE IJH Committee are urging area residents to attend and support the effort. The council special meeting will be at 5:30 p.m. in Council Chambers, lower level of the the Toledo Community Building, 103 S. Church St.

The Juvenile Home was ordered closed in January by Governor Terry Branstad and Iowa Department of Human Services Director Charles Palmer.

The girls at the Toledo facility were placed elsewhere and some 90 employees were laid off.

Since then, legislation has been introduced calling for reopening it and a Polk County District Court Judge has ordered IJH reopened.

The court order has been appealed to the Iowa Supreme Court by Branstad.

The Iowa Juvenile Home in Toledo has served youth in the state since 1920. It is the largest employer in Toledo.
