The South Tama 9th Grade girls' basketball team finished the first half of their season strong with a close 40-39 win over their rivals from Grinnell on Saturday December 21st. At one point in the 1st quarter the Trojans were up by 12 points, but the Tigers battled back to tie the score.
The game was back and forth the rest of the way but in the end, the Trojans won the game on free throws, finishing 6 for 9 from the line in the fourth quarter. The team was led by point guard Minnie Climer with 16 points and Serena Lowe added 9, while Kaitlin Berger, Abby Llewellyn, and Lauren Yuska each added 4.
The girls began their season on Dec 2nd with a big victory over Benton Community 45-40 and were led by Climer's 18 points including four 3 pointers and Berger's 14 points and 10 rebounds. The very next day the Trojans took on a very tough Grinnell Tiger team and suffered their first loss of the season 31-27. "Grinnell was a very physical team that really shut down our main scorer and we just were not able to make shots when we needed to, said Coach Ahrens. Climer once again led all scorers with 13 points, including three 3 pointers.
On Dec. 5th the girls faced off against Waterloo West and ending up getting a big win 54-10. All 12 Trojans players saw significant playing team and 9 out of the 12 girls scored at least 2 points. Climer had another big night with 19 points, while Llewellyn chipped in 13. In the Trojans next game they played Union at home on Dec. 12th. In a very physical and close game the Trojans won 33-27. "This game was won by defense as a number of girls stepped up to shut down Union's leader scorer, added Coach Ahrens. Climer had 16 points to go along with 8 steals. Shae Slaven contributed 7 points and Berger 6 points in a winning effort.
In their first road game of the season, STC traveled to East Marshall where they defeated the Mustangs 37-17. With the 20 point victory, all 13 players played lots of minutes and 9 players ended up with at least one basket.
Climer led all scorers again with 11 points, finishing in double digit scoring for all six of the Trojan games so far this season. Berger added 8 points, while Slaven and Lowe added 5 points apiece.
The 9th grade roster consists of: Brycelyn Haughey, Lauren Yuska, Shae Slaven, Kaitlin Berger, Allison Yuska, Shayla Peshel, Jordyn Thompson, Minnie Climer, Nyana Eubanks, Abby Llewellyn, Serena Lowe, Mikaila Collier, Mallory Thede, and managers Sabrina Holtz, Ellie Cervantes, and Carina Chavarria.
After the break, the team will spend most of their time on the road, but have two home games remaining on Jan. 24th vs. East Marshall and Feb. 1st vs. Boone.
