Chelsea seeks your help for Community History Book

November 15, 2013
From: Janet Balvin , Toledo Chronicle, Tama News-Herald

In an effort to preserve the rich heritage of Chelsea, the Chelsea Sesquicentennial History Book Committee plans to publish a joint community/family history book. We would like for the book to contain all the families presently in the Chelsea area, as well as those who resided here in the past 25 years.

The book will contain information covering Chelsea's 150 years of existence with emphasis on the last 25 years. Even if your family story was in a previous Chelsea book, we would like to include it in this book.

Included in the Community History Book will be a brief history and picture of all the following who wish to participate and will be published in the book free of charge: All households (both old and new families & both previous and present residents), military, schools, churches, social, civic & fraternal organizations, cemeteries, businesses (includes home and ag-based), and celebrations. Also, please lend us your general interest photos: street scenes, rural scenes, early ball teams, church groups, school groups, celebrations, early businesses, etc. Your pictures will be returned to you.

We invite all families to take a few minutes now to discuss putting their material on paper and selecting a photograph, either a current one or old on (black-and-white or color) and submit these as follows:

In approximately 600 words per household (approximately 1 double-spaced page at 12 pt) explain the beginnings and bring the story up to today. Sample stories are available from one of the committee members. Please proofread your story carefully.

Each story should be signed-"Submitted by________."

Type the story or have it typed on plain typing paper, double-spaced, and keep a copy for your own record.

Submit a picture with the story. Write a caption for the picture as well as the name and address of the owner so that the picture can be returned to you after the book is published. Tape (no paper clips or staples please) these pieces of information to the back of the picture. Do not submit the picture in a frame.

If your picture is old and fragile, it is advisable to have a photo-print made by a photographer or you may submit a quality, high-resolution (300 dpi) laser scan that has been trimmed, either a hard copy or a clearly labeled digital file on a CD-ROM in tif format.

The picture and story should be turned in or mailed to: Chelsea Public Library, PO Box 188, Chelsea IA 52215, NO LATER THAN JANUARY 15, 2014.

Some stories may need to be shortened if repetitious of other stories or if space does not permit, but this is only if absolutely necessary. If you wish to memorialize or honor your parents or others, additional space is available. Contact a committee member or obtain an order form for more information.

We expect the book to contain from 160 to 200 pages or more and include 300-500 pictures, depending on the number of families, churches, organizations, etc. that submit their stories and pictures. The more submitted the better the book will be for the same price. For those reserving the book BEFORE publication, the Early Bird Price is $40. After that, the price will be higher. This will be a Limited Edition printing and the book is certain to have collector's value in time. Reserve your personal copies now to be sure you get them. This will make a handsome and memorable gift. Gift certificates are available.

This book will be of excellent quality, beautiful, permanent, and hard-bound. Sample history books from the publishing company are available to examine. You may leave your pictures, story and order form at the Chelsea Public Library (Monday 10:30 AM-4:30 PM, Tuesday & Wednesday 1:30 5:30 PM, Thursday 2-7 PM, and Saturday 9 AM Noon) or mail them to the Chelsea Library (address given above).

Again your picture and story will be included in the book ABSOLUTELY FREE and will be an important part of this special publication for anyone who ever called Chelsea home.
