The South Tama School Board met Monday night, Nov. 4, to discuss the bids for a service proposal for the South Tama High School boiler.
At a previous meeting the board discussed the need to replace the boiler at the High School. Steve McAdoo, director of Building Maintenance, consulted with two different companies about the process and requested bids.
TSP of Marshalltown submitted a proposal for $35,000 with additional reimbursable costs up to $5,375. Brewer Engineering Consultants of Bondurant, gave a proposal of $16,975.

The project description includes the design and specification of the replacement / upgrade of the two existing steam water boilers with newer efficiency hot water boilers.
They will provide the sizing, selection and layout of the boiler room. It is the intent at this time to use the existing doors to get equipment in and out. They are aware there is a panel that could be removed in the brick exterior wall if necessary for boiler removal.
The scope of the mechanical work will include showing equipment and piping to be removed, showing new equipment and piping to be installed, show new piping to existing gymnasium air handlers, show coil replacements at existing gym air handlers, specify new boiler controls (digital, expandable for future), design a new combustion air ductwork and control as needed.
The scope of the electrical work will include demolition of all electrical connections to existing equipment to be removed, and show connections to new equipment. General construction work will include housekeeping pads for new boilers and pumps. They will prepare bid documents and distribute to contractors for taking bids. They will assist in opening bids and in making evaluation of the bids and will lead the preconstruction meeting, perform periodic reviews during construction and perform a final inspection.
The proposed lump sum fee arrangement for the work was described by Design and Bidding Phase at $10,475 and the Construction Phase at $6,500 for the total engineering fees coming to $16,975.00
Invoices will be submitted monthly, with payment expected within 30 days. If changes in the scope require an adjustment of fees, additional services will be negotiated and an amendment to the signed agreement will be issued for approval. The proposal is valid for thirty days.
Other items discussed were the scheduling at the High School Level and also a tentative discussion about classroom space.
