Easter Seals Iowa recognized Dennis Dostal, Toledo, on Oct. 17 with the Volunteer of the Year Award at Camp Sunnyside in Des Moines. Dennis is a member of the Pony Express Riders of Iowa, a group that hosts fundraisers in their home county in Iowa throughout the year to benefit Easter Seals Iowa. Over its 45-year history, Pony Express Riders has raised more than $9 million for Easter Seals Iowa.
Dostal has run the Double D Rodeo for more than 30 years and three years ago partnered to make the event a fundraiser under the Pony Express Riders of Iowa umbrella. Dostal and the Double D Rodeo crew are very involved Pony Express members representing the Northeast Iowa region. In fact, Pony Express went from having no active group in Tama County to now becoming the top fundraising county in the state last year.
"We are so pleased to be able to honor an individual who has made an incredible impact for Easter Seals Iowa," President and CEO of Easter Seals Iowa Sherri Nielsen said. "The funds raised allow us to carry out our mission of providing exceptional services to ensure that all people with disabilities or special needs and their families have equal opportunities to live, learn, work and play in their communities."
Dostal said, "I was familiar with only a few programs that Easter Seals provides, until some Pony Express members asked me to bring my team to a fundraiser. Once I began to learn more about existing programs, I knew that I, along with family and friends, could do more to help. I am learning of more programs all the time and continue to be amazed at all of the assistance available to Iowans with disabilities through Easter Seals Iowa. It just makes me want to work harder to raise money with the Pony Express Riders."
