Des Moines man pays $50,000 in bad checks to Meskwaki Casino

Before Judge Marsha A. Beckelman in Tama County District Court in Toledo:

Christopher Dale Betts, 34, Des Moines, entered a written guilty plea to 3rd degree theft in a plea agreement. He received a suspended two-year prison term, was fined $625 and placed on probation for two years. He was allowed time to pay the fine and additional court costs.

The Clerk of Court was directed to pay a total of $50,300 on deposit with the office to the Meskwaki Casino, rural Tama, as restitution in the case.

Betts was charged on Jan. 15 with 1st degree theft for allegedly writing a total of 10 checks to the Meskwaki Casino in the amount of $5,000 each over a period from Oct. 27-Nov. 27, 2012. All were returned by the bank marked insufficient funds according to the court records. the charge was filed by Meskwaki Nation Tribal Police Officer Scott Brammer.
