Dorothy Behounek, 101, of Tama and formerly of Chelsea, died Friday, Oct. 11, at Sunny Hill Care Center in Tama. Services are Wednesday, Oct. 16, at St. Joseph's Catholic Church, Chelsea at 10 a.m. with Deacon Joe Behounek officiating. Burial was in St. Joseph's Catholic Cemetery, Chelsea. Hrabak Funeral Home, Belle Pliane, is in charge of arrangements.
Dorothy was born on Aug. 13, 1912, in Tama County the daughter of Frank and Mary (Kuklik) Shilhanek. She graduated from Tama High School. She was married to Leonard Behounek on Feb. 27, 1935. She was a housewife, telephone operator, country school teacher and taught Head Start in 1964.
The couple moved off the farm to Chelsea in 1961.
Dorothy enjoyed her garden, knitting, sewing, canning out of her garden, and working for church dinners. She was a member of Homemakers, Lady Forresters and Royal Neighbors organizations.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Leonard on Jan. 14, 2008; and brother, Leonard Shilhanek.
Survivors are her children Donald (Sharon) Behounek of Chelsea and Joan (John) Kupka of Brooklyn, Iowa; 13 grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
