Young Guns 4H Club meets

October 3, 2013
Toledo Chronicle, Tama News-Herald

The regular meeting of the Tama County Young Guns 4H Club was held August 24 at Rachel Silhanek's. The members had shooting practice prior to the meeting. They tried out the new action shoot range with their .22 rifles, then practiced shotgun and archery.

Connor Casto called the meeting to order at 5:20. There were five members present and six parents and visitors. Roll call was to clear a muzzleloader and name a part. Connor led the Pledge to the American flag. Connor read the minutes to the last meeting. They were approved by Wyatt Hintermeister and seconded by Rachel.

Old business discussed was the budget that was set into place, and that everyone had a good time at the pizza and ice cream party while we were working on the bucket of junk. We made four different things out of the hunk we collected. The turtle auctioned off for $60, cattails for $140, deer head for $160, and the goose sold for $250. The money made goes into the 4H scholarship funds. Thank you to everyone who helped at the fair. Everyone was asked how they did at the fair and reminded that the State Shoot will be September 28. Jensen Vodochodsky motioned to end old business and Wyatt seconded it.

New business discussed was to vote on each member that sold 30 raffle tickets, the club would pay for their membership fees. Liesel Casto approved the vote and Rachel seconded it, and it passed unanimously. We set times to sit at Theisens to sell raffle tickets August 31 and September 7.

Greg Stewart is putting on a shoot at the range for the NRA and we will be setting up a table to recruit new members and possibly sell pork burgers also. Got a call from Pheasants Forever - they will be putting a convention together January 31 to February 2 and the first 30 shooting sports clubs that sign up will get $3,500, two coaches and three kids will attend the convention. The cost of the meal is paid by Pheasants Forever.

We will be given a rifle to raffle off worth $1,500. Any extra over the amount of the rifle is ours. Josh is starting a new rifle program and we will be trying it our at the next meeting. Wyatt motioned to end new business and Jensen seconded it.

Leaders report is to also try and bring a friend to the next meeting. Today's presentation was with Rachel talking about deer antlers and Connor showing how to clean a muzzleloader. The next meeting will be September 21 at the Casto's residence. Connor will be the host and will start off the new 4H year with a presentation. We will have shooting practice before the meeting, and a potluck and bonfire at the meeting.
