MARSHALLTOWN The Iowa Valley Community College District Board of Directors approved a three-year lease agreement with Morning Glory Bakery to operate the Orpheum Coffee Shop in downtown Marshalltown when it met this week.
In presenting the lease agreement to the Board, IVCCD Chancellor Chris Duree said that the lease is in response to the Board's directive to address the financial deficits in the Orpheum Theater Center operations. Morning Glory owner Laurie Wadle will pay Iowa Valley $250 a month for the first year, $275 a month for the second year, and $325 a month for the third year of the lease. Morning Glory will prepare the food at its 13th Street store, and serve it at both locations.
"Morning Glory has an outstanding reputation for food and service, and we believe they will maintain the quality that people have come to expect from them," said Dr. Duree.
The marquee of the Orpheum Theatre in downtown Marshalltown displays a message applauding the 2006 passage of a $34 million bond issue which included some $3.4 million to complete an unfinished renovations and equipping of the building. While the issue passed with 62.5 percent approval district-wide, it failed in the South Tama District 632-610.
Also related to food services, the Iowa Valley Board approved a food service agreement with Triple T Specialty Meats of Ackley for operation of the concession stand at the Ellsworth Equestrian Center in Iowa Falls. It was noted that the College will receive 6 percent of gross sales under terms of the agreement.
The Board handled two matters pertaining to the State of Iowa Metrology Lab on the Ellsworth Community College (ECC) campus in Iowa Falls. First, the Board approved receipt of a one-time $50,000 payment by the Iowa Department of Agriculture and Land Stewardship (IDALS) for operation of the Metrology Lab.
In later action, the Board approved a one-year agreement with IDALS for operation of the Metrology Lab, with the IDALS contribution increasing from $28,590 last year to $40,000 for 2013-2014.
It was noted that the District asked for more, and that this is a pivotal year in which the Metrology Lab operations need to show a profit or the District will not be likely to host the facility in the future.
In other matters, the Board:
approved a one-year extension of the lease agreement for buildings on the ECC campus with the Ellsworth College Board of Trustees.
approved first-time Iowa Jobs Training Agreements with Plastic Recycling of Iowa Falls and Bjelland Plumbing of Marshalltown, both in the amount of $4,999; approved a $432,400 agreement with Iowa Workforce Development for operation of the Promise Jobs Central Territory by Iowa Valley.
approved several agreements with area high schools to provide college level courses; and approved a revised 2013-2014 academic calendar.
Several gifts were accepted by the Board, including an anonymous donation of $1,000 to the Friends of the Orpheum campaign, various new auto parts donated by Wes Finch Auto Plaza for the Iowa Valley Grinnell (IVG) Auto Repair Tech program, miscellaneous items donated by Fisher Controls to the Marshalltown Community College (MCC) Machine Tool Technology program, chemicals and parts donated by Brownells for the IVG Gunsmith program, a Trimble EZ-Guide 500 light donated by Trimble Navigational Limited for the ECC Agriculture program, "Essential Documents the FBI File on Jean Seberg Part II" donated by Nancy Adams for the Orpheum Theater Center's Jean Seberg International Film Festival and $100 donated by Elizabeth Siemers to the Friends of the Orpheum campaign.
It was noted that the three incumbent Board members seeking re-election to the Iowa Valley Board of Directors (Yvonne Mallory, Deb Jones and Delbert Kellogg) were all re-elected by voters during the Sept. 10 school election.
The next regular meeting of the IVCCD Board of Directors will be at 4 p.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 9, at the IVCCD District Administration building on the Iowa Valley/MCC campus in Marshalltown.
