Alliant Energy employee Al Chmelik, rural Tama, (center) put his knowledge of a company Foundation program to good use in obtaining a grant from Alliant totaling $2,500 for the Oak Hill Cemetery Veterans Flag fund drive. The money will purchase a total of 80 flags which brings the drive to about the half-way point with some 246 flags left to buy. With Chmelik are his father, Don, a Korean War veteran, mother, Dot, who is a member of the Legion Auxillary aiding in the drive, Tama City Clerk Judy Welch, an Oak Hill Cemetery Association member and Tama Mayor Dan Zimmerman. The flags are being replaced in an effort being led by Tama Legion Commander Dave Baier. Many of the flags displayed each Memorial Day are those which draped veterans' caskets and are of cotton material. They are wearing out and also are very heavy when wet and difficult to handle. Contact Baier at 641-484-5792 for more information.
