Robert E. Coomer, 93, of Clinton, Ill.,and formerly of Tama, passed away Thursday, Aug. 29, 2013, at his home in Clinton. Funeral Services will be held Wednesday, Sept. 4, at 2 p.m. at Kruse-Phillips Funeral Home in Tama with William R. Gibbons officiating. Interment will follow at St. Patrick's Cemetery in Tama with Military Honors. Visitation will be held Wednesday, Sept. 4, from 1 p.m. until the time of service at Kruse-Phillips Funeral Home.
Robert was born on July 6, 1920, in Rankin, Ky., the son of Samuel and Molly (Brown) Coomer. Robert served his country in the U.S. Marines during World War II. On July 11, 1948, he was united in marriage to Devota A. Moyer in Tama. Robert worked as a labor organizer and representative for Paper Workers International Union. He enjoyed fishing, boating and reading, most importantly; he enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Devota on Dec. 22, 1999; two brothers; and one sister. Survivors include two sons, John J. Coomer of Clinton, Ill., and Douglas E. (Julie) Coomer of Fairview Heights, Ill.; one daughter, Carol A. Paper of Iowa City; two grandchildren, Kristen L. Bakken of Seattle, Wash.., and Stacey Struck of Bettendorf; one great-grandson, Alexander Robert Springer of Bettendorf; a half brother, Leland Coomer of Monticello; and a half sister, Rita (Ray) Lester of West Virginia.
