Mark your calendars! The date for Chelsea's Sesquicentennial Celebration has been set for Saturday, July 26, 2014.
One of the major events of the celebration will be the Fourth Annual Chelsea Car Show. This year's show was a huge success with over 170 vehicles registering. Dash plaques were given to the first 100 registered entries. Registered participants voted for their favorites and awards were given to the Top 30. Another 15 judged awards were presented to the Best in each of the following categories: Paint, Interior, Engine, Motorcycle, Rat Rod, Truck, Convertible, GM, Ford, Mopar, Chevelle, Camaro, and '76-Present. A Best of Show Stock and Best of Show Modified completed the judged awards. Kudos to the organizers of this event: Aaron & MelissaBalvin,Jason Balvin, & Kelly Vesley. Also, a big thank you to all of the sponsors and to the MANY volunteers who helped out on the day of the event. We're looking forward to an even larger turnout next year to help Chelsea celebrate its 150th birthday!
Of course a celebration wouldn't be complete without a PARADE! We hope to have many participants from individuals and organizations from Chelsea and the surrounding communities. So, start planning now for your or your organization's entry!
We also plan to have various other events and activities take place throughout the day. People have already volunteered to organize a Gas Engine & Tractor Show and a Vendor Fair (possibly including a craft show &/or flea market). Several ideas and suggestions are being discussed and considered. (Who knowsif there are enough volunteers and activities, we may have to start the celebration on Friday, July 25 and / or carry it over to Sunday, July 27 ?!)
A beautiful quilt has already been made by Chelsea residents and is on display at the Chelsea Savings Bank in Chelsea. Raffle tickets are being sold at the bank and a winner will be drawn during the 150th Celebration. Be sure to stop by the bank and see this amazing piece of artwork!
There is interest in putting together a Chelsea History Book and /or a Chelsea History Display. We are looking for photos, family and business history, stories, past news articles and anything else that you think might be of interest. If you have anything you would like to share or include in the book and / or display, contact Sarah Silhanek or send an email to:
Another main event that will take place is the Annual Hog Roast and Street Dance that is hosted by the Chelsea Volunteer Fire Department. This event takes place on the evening of the last Saturday in July, so this will be a wonderful conclusion to the day's festivities.
The next planning meeting will be on FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER, 6 at 7 p.m. at the Chelsea Fire Station. Please attend if you would like to comment, share your ideas, volunteer, or just hear what is going on. You can also contact the Planning Committee by emailing firstname.lastname@example.org. Be sure to check out "Chelsea's 150th " on Facebook too!! Hope to see you on September 6!
