South Tama Schools Superintendent Kerri Nelson presented the superintendent's annual report showing enrollment increasing slightly last year after a decline for some time to the school board on Monday night, Aug. 5.
The enrollment showed 1,560.98 students enrolled - 61.24 percent Caucasian, 25.96 per cent Hispanic, 11.5 per cent Native American and 1.3 percent other.
Other report items included:
47.5 percent of students are on the free and reduced lunch program.
some of the facility improvements include adding a digital control system , new lights in the gymnasium, remodel entrance to the middle school, relocate the print shop and business office and a new sign in front of the school provided by the Booster Club.
dropout rate was reduced nearly 50 percent in the last two years, and it is anticipated it will reduce in half again in the upcoming school year.
PPEL On Sept. 10 Ballot
Board members Michelle Yuska, Jackie Dvorak, Anne Michael, Mark McFate and Ron Hala discussed the upcoming district-wide vote on renewal of the Physical Plant and Equipment Levy (PPEL).
The levy would remain at the same rate of $1.34 per $1000 of taxable property value for fiscal years 2014-2023 as previously approved by the voters through June 30, 2014.
PPEL is the levy that can be used for a number of expenditures including construction of buildings, purchasing property, buses and technology equipment and energy conservation expenditures.
The levy cannot be used for staff salaries or supplies, those expenditures must come from a school district's General Fund.
On an annual basis the PPEL funds are used for roof repair and replacement, HVAC replacement, carpet replacement, bus purchases and more.
In addition the PPEL funds have been used to install energy saving controls, install technology, install fiber optics throughout the district, purchase of computers, hardware / server replacement, locker replacement and purchase equipment throughout the years.
Contracts and Resignations
Contracts approved were for Dixie Forcht, high school - middle school library - media specialist; Daniel Westhof, 7th grade assistant football coach $1,355; Nicole Mathews was reassigned as fall cheerleading coach, $986; Marilyn Schultz and Juanita Hill, regular route bus drivers,, at $25.60 per hour for two routes per day; Sandra Jensen, high school evening custodian, $11.97 per hour.
Internal transfers include Doug Cherveny from high school custodian to elementary day custodian, and Calvin Johnson will move from high school evening custodian to high school day custodian.
Resignations were accepted from Dalene Hala, food service, Chelsea Ahrens fall event manager, Dave Smith, bus driver, Amanda Morris and Suzanne Lux high school Special education aides, and Leticia Babinet as middle school special education aide.
Advisory Committee Named
School Improvement Advisory Committee Members selected are Jill Bacon, Larry and Denise Fletcher, Laura Galvez, Leesa Haughey, Brian Oliver, Brenda Wanatee, Matt Zmolek and Shayna Zmolek.
Breakfast, Hot Lunch Prices Hiked
In order to participate in the Federal Nutrition program the district must continue to increase lunch prices to the weighted average price equal to or above $2.59.
The district can not increase to this amount in one year. There is an increase cap that limits the district to no more than a ten cents per year.
The board recommended increasing breakfast prices for 2013-2014, Kindergarten through 12th from $1.05 to $1.15 and adult breakfast from $1.15 to $1.25, a ten cent increase.
Also recommended was increasing lunch prices for 2013-2014 from $1.90 elementary and $2.00 secondary to $2.00 elementary and $2.10 secondary, a ten cent increase.
School Bus Discipline
A revised bus discipline procedure to be included in the Handbook includes the bus expectations such as "at all times, bus students must observe all bus expectations. If a student chooses to break a rule, the following consequences are applied. First incident will be an office referral and parents will be notified. Second incident there will be an office referral (Major) and parents will be notified.
Third incident there will
be a conference with the principal, bus driver, parents and student to develop a behavior plan for the student. Fourth incident and the student will lose riding privileges for at least two weeks. Severe misbehavior will result in a conference with the principal, parents and student. Student loss of riding privileges for a number of days or the remainder of the school year. This could happen on the first or any incident. If a student chooses to follow the rules, he or she may earn positive information given to parents, PBIS tickets, and self satisfaction of being a responsible citizen of South Tama County Elementary.
In other business:
bids were mailed to two vendors for the bread bids and only one responded. Sara Lee will be the supplier for the 2013-14 Nutrition Program bread products.
three vendors were contacted for bids on milk and only one responded. Anderson-Erickson will be the supplier for milk products for the 2013-2014 Nutrition Program.
