Van Dyk tabs Player of the Year honor

Class 3A girls' state golf champion Paige Van Dyk from South Tama and 1A boys' runner-up Jacob Smoldt were both named Players of the Year for their respective divisions by the Iowa High School Golf Coaches Association.

Van Dyk, Smoldt and 1A girls' third-place finisher Hillary Samo of Grundy Center were selected to the all-tournament team, while the same three golfers were among the 10 from the Marshalltown area named to the IHSGCA's all-state squads.

First-team honors went to Smoldt and Grundy Center senior Elliott Eggleston in Class 1A boys, Van Dyk in 3A girls, and four members of the Grundy Center girls' 1A state champion squad. Senior Baylie Wrage, juniors Lindsay Freeman and Samo, and sophomore Josie McMartin rounded out the area's first-team selections.

Marshalltown sophomore Ashley Harris was a Class 5A girls second-team selection. Receiving Class 1A boys second-team honors were Grundy Center's Ryon Appel, a senior, and junior Lane Bangasser.
