The Tama Public Library has received a grant from the Tama County Community Foundation in the amount of $700.
The library has added funds from the State Library's Enrich Iowa program, to purchased new items. We have replaced our old TV with a new 40 inch digital TV and also purchased a Blu-ray player. These are in the Children's Theater area. We also purchased a Nook-HD, Kindle Fire and an I-pad. These were purchased for teaching purposes.
Once the library staff is taught how to use them, we will be able to show patrons, one on one how to use them to access NEIBORS, where patrons can checkout and download audio and e-books.
We have plans to schedule small classes for the public later this fall, as time permits. We thank the Tama County Community Foundation for helping us with this project, which will help us better serve our patrons with this new technology.
The Louise & Lucile Hink/Tama Public Library also received a $500 grant from the Dollar General Literacy Organization to support its literacy programs.
Specifically, the grant will provide funds used for the library's 2013 Summer Reading Program: Dig into Reading.
Funds from this grant will allow us to purchase incentive prizes to award to the children as they read and turn in their reading logs. I want to emphasize the importance of reading throughout the summer months to keep our children from what is referred to as "Summer Drop", where children can actually lose some of their reading and learning skills during the summer months, simply by not using those skills.
Our summer reading program consists of 4 weekly programs for children from Preschool through 12th grade, with an extra program in August to end the summer. Children read and keep logs throughout the months of June and July. On Aug. 6, we will all attend a special program and find out who the winners of the big prizes will be.
Everyone will receive reading certificates, and other certificates for food, etc. donated by local sponsors. Everyone who attends our summer reading program is a winner, in more ways than one.
