Pair sentenced for casino-hotel vending thefts

Two Marshalltown residents were sentenced on June 18 on 5th degree theft charges in a ruling handed down following an April 2 joint trial.

Jessica Ann Hartwig, 29, and Jason Wayne Mull, 40, both were found guilty of three counts of 5th degree theft. They were accused by Meskwaki Nation Tribal Police of obtaining cash and items from vending machines on three floors of the Meskwaki Hotel on Oct. 17. According to trial records, paper was temporarily placed over security camera lenses monitoring vending areas. The pair were observed on the security tapes prior to the action.

The thefts were then discovered.

Hartwig was sentenced to seven days in jail to be served concurrently with a sentence imposed in a separate case in Marshall County. She was assessed $369 in court costs.

Mull was sentenced to three days in jail also to be served concurrently with a Marshall County sentence. He was assessed court costs totaling $482.

No fines were imposed. No restitution was required because the victim did not provide any information according to court records.

Jeanne Anne Downs, 63, Montour, was found guilty of allowing a dog to run at-large following trial. She was assessed $200 in fine and court costs. The Tama County Sheriff's Office filed the charge.

Douglas Shane Duncan, 41, rural Tama, did not appear for trial on a charge of no driver's license and was adjudged guilty. He was assessed a fine and court costs totaling $490. the charge was filed by Meskwaki Nation Tribal Police on May 11.

Matthew Allen Ryan, 22, Chelsea, did not appear for trial and was adjudged guilty of driving while license suspended. He was assessed a fine and court costs totaling $485. The charge was filed by Toledo Police.
