Betty Jean Kriegel, 87, of Tama, passed away Saturday, June 22, 2013 at her home under the care of her family and Iowa River Hospice. Funeral Services will be held Wednesday, June 26, 2013 at 10:30 AM at Kruse-Phillips Funeral Home in Tama with Rev. Dewey Grimes officiating. Interment will follow at Sheridan Cemetery in rural Malcom. Visitation will be held Tuesday, June 25, 2013 from 5-7 PM at Kruse-Phillips Funeral Home.
Betty was born on June 26, 1925 in Tama, the daughter of Alva Vernon and Lela Mae (Fowler) Zigler. She attended rural schools in Tama and Belle Plaine and graduated from Redding High School. She also attended Maryville State Teachers College. On April 21, 1947, she was united in marriage to Jerold Paul Kriegel in Troy, Kansas. Betty owned K's Caf in Tama, starting on April 1, 1967 and retired in 1982. She loved to cook, play cards and fish. Betty was a very giving person and enjoyed children. Preceding her in death were her parents; her husband, Jerold in 1973; one sister, Donna Gitautis; and one brother, Leonard Zigler. Survivors include a son, Jerry (Laurie) Kriegel of Tama; three grandchildren, Jerry Paul (Melisa) Kriegel of Belle Plaine, Candace Sue Kriegel of Tama, and Becky (Brian) Smith of Cedar Rapids; three great-grandchildren, Hope and Blake Kriegel, and Aurora Kriegel Querry; and many nieces and nephews. A memorial fund has been established.
