Toledo Chronicle, Tama News-Herald

MARSHALLTOWN - Marshalltown Community College has announced that its Industrial Maintenance Technology (IMT) program will be moving to the Marshalltown campus starting this fall. The program, under the instruction of Jack Aker, had been offered exclusively on the campus of Iowa Valley Grinnell for several years. This move will add to the already strong trades department at MCC that consists of programs like Machine Tool Technology, Welding, and Construction.

"The move from Iowa Valley Community College Grinnell to Marshalltown Community College is an exciting time in the life of the Industrial Maintenance Technology program," says Jack Aker, IMT instructor.

"While the move to Marshalltown will be beneficial to the program, we are also offering some great new options to our curriculum. We will be offering a new two-year Associate of Applied Science degree, an Electro-Mechanical Systems Analyses, and two one-year diploma programs for those students that are interested in entering either the electrical or mechanical maintenance fields after a year of training."

Industrial Maintenance students learn the fundamentals of maintaining, repairing, and servicing the sophisticated production and operational equipment systems used in commercial and industrial complexes.

Skilled industrial maintenance technicians learn a broad range of technical skills to keep businesses and industries up and running. Behind every successful business, and its equipment, is an Industrial Maintenance professional.

According to statistics from the Department of Labor, industrial maintenance is one of the fastest growing occupations in Iowa, with an annual growth rate of about 5 percent.

The salary range for skilled industrial maintenance personnel in Central Iowa is very good - from $14.13 to more than $18 an hour. For those interested in earning a four-year degree, MCC's AAS degree in Industrial Maintenance Technology transfers directly into the University of Northern Iowa's Technology Management major.

"It is my hope that the move to Marshalltown and the changes to the curriculum will attract a diverse group of new students into the IMT program," adds Aker. "If you're looking for a career where jobs are available, the pay is good, and where you're not doing the same thing day in and day out, then a career in Industrial Maintenance may be for you."

Marshalltown Community College is a great place to take your next step in education, whether it is career training for a profession such as Industrial Maintenance Tech, or a start toward a four-year degree.

The unique opportunity for one-on-one assistance helps students from a variety of backgrounds with a multitude of goals all find a comfortable fit for learning as they strive toward personal success.
