South Tama school administrators, support staff voted 3.66 pay boosts

South Tama Schools administrators and support staff will see 3.66 percent pay hikes in the next fiscal year. The raises were approved on a 5-0 vote during a special session of the school board on Monday, June 3 with members Michelle Yuska, Ron Hala, Mark McFate, Jackie Dvorak and Anne Michael present.

On April 15, the board approved salary hikes totaling 3.63 percent for South Tama teachers for the 2013-14 fiscal year.

Present administration annual salaries are: superintendent- Kerri Nelson - $122,904; business manager- Mary Boege - $84,000; high school principal- Roy Frakes - $95,959; assistant high school principal and activities director- Jim Plantz - $83,359; elementary principal - Jim Bugge - $88,884; assistant elementary principal - Mary Sherwood - $66,021; middle school principal- Eric Townsley - $82,104; and assistant middle school principal- Jeremy Jones - $66,021.

The salary of the elementary assistant principal was adjusted to $70,000 annually.

Support personnel includes custodial staff, bus drivers, cooks and teacher associates according to Mary Boege, district business manager..

Contracts approved, were Daniel "Lennie" Hogendorn, high school evening custodial duty effective June 17, at a salary of $11.54, eight hours daily for 260 days; Amy Stotts, middle school summer school, effective June 10 through June 28, at $22 an hour; and Rachel Kramer, elementary special education , effective Aug. 16, $27,100 and TSS.

Resignations were approved for DaLon Hammond, high school science and spring event manager, and Kristin Milroy from middle school special education.

Eric Townsley, middle school principal and part of the Middle School Language Arts Team, has requested a new language arts textbook to use an instructional resource.

The text aligns with the Iowa Core and district curriculum. Townsley says the Holt McDougal Literature is a comprehensive resource that addresses all key points of the Common Core State Standards in English Language Arts (ELA). With a strong balance of classic and contemporary literature and diverse informational texts that progressively develop and apply students' ELA skills, this program includes writers' workshops, media studies and research units that address the integrated nature of the Standards. Townsley says this program includes fiction, non fiction, poetry, biographies, etc. Townsley says these are short stories rather than long books of literature.

The cost of the Holt McDougal Literature is $9,468 which was approved for purchase on a 5-0 vote.

Nesper Sign Advertising of Cedar Rapids will provide a sign for the South Tama Ag-Ed department. The cost will be $1.500 and will include all quality materials and professional labor and equipment to design and fabricate two single-faced pre-finished .080 white aluminum panels finished with digital print to match a Nesper design.

The school will furnish the installation and installation supports.

The board also met in closed session.
