The South Tama County girls tennis team may have saved its best play for last this season. Competing at the Individual Regional Tennis Tournament at Byrnes Park in Waterloo, the Trojans advanced two to the semifinals in Region 4.
Junior Emily Martin earned third place medalist honors, as well as, being named an alternate for the State Tournament to be held May 30-31 at the Ankeny Tennis Complex. Juniors Madison Baack and Tori Appelgate teamed up to finish fourth in doubles.
Region 4 teams consisted of Independence, Waterloo Columbus, Maquoketa, Mount Vernon, Dike-New Hartford, Marion, Union and South Tama. In order to qualify for the State Tournament, players must advance and reach the finals. The tournament was single elimination.
STC posted a perfect record in the first round as Martin and junior Regina Balderas advanced in singles play. The doubles teams of Baack and Appelgate and Leah Mann and Caitlin Svacina also advanced.
Round of 16 Results: No. 3 seed Martin defeated Isabella Logan of Mount Vernon 6-0, 6-0; Balderas over Kendra Shaw of Maquoketa 7-6 (3), 7-5; No. 4 seed Baack and Appelgate bounced Lacey Root and Josie Saunders of Maquoketa 6-0, 6-0; Mann and Svacina downed Morgann Crossland and Maddy Rolling of Maquoketa 6-7 (5), 6-3, 6-0.
Quarterfinal Round Results: Martin defeated Jessica Kloft of Maquoketa 6-2, 6-2; Baack and Appelgate downed Madi Rummel and Paige Versluis of Independence 6-2, 6-0; Balderas fell to the No. 4 seed, and former state qualifier, Gabby Greco of Waterloo Columbus 1-6, 1-6; Mann and Svacina lost to the No. 2 seed, Joiah Bandfield and Jessica Thomas of Marion 2-6, 2-6.
Semifinal Results: Martin lost to the No. 2 seed, and former state qualifier, Ashlee Sinnott of Waterloo Columbus 3-6, 2-6 (Sinnott went on to win the region championship.); Baack and Appelgate fell to the No. 1 seed, and two-time state qualifiers, Lindsey McManus and Lindsey McGonegle from Waterloo Columbus 0-6, 1-6 (McManus and McGonegle went on to win the region championship.)
Consolation Round (Third Place) Results: Martin defeated Grecco of Waterloo Columbus 6-4, 3-6, 1-0 (4); Baack and Appelgate fell to Bandfield and Thomas of Marion 3-6, 2-6.
STC finished its 2013 season with a 5-3 dual meet record and a second place finish at the North Iowa Cedar League Conference Meet. The Trojans return the top six singles players for the 2014 Season.
