Rural Toledo man is facing multiple charges involving minors

A 51-year-old rural Toledo man faces a total of 11 sexual abuse charges involving minors and was being held in the Tama County Jail on $100,000 cash bond on Friday.

Stewart David Smith is accused of enticing or attempting to entice a minor with intent to commit sexual abuse and / or exploitation of that minor. Two of the charges involve children under age 16 and seven of the charges include children under age 13.

Smith is also accused of two counts of indecent contact with a child for the purpose of arousing or satisfying his sexual desire.

The alleged incidents occurred during the winter months of 2012-13 according to information filed by Tama County Deputy Sheriff Bruce Rhoads.

Smith was earlier charged on May 6 with three counts of child endangerment / no injury in Tama County District Court, online records show.

Court records show Smith was convicted of what was described as three counts of 1st degree sexual conduct in 1989.
