Veterans’ Memorial is ready

Listing of area Memeorial Day Services

May 24, 2013
Toledo Chronicle, Tama News-Herald

Construction of the new veterans' memorial is finished. Thanks to the generosity of donors even more can be done to enhance the memorial. Extra funding is being used for plantings.

Also the memorial will have eight bronze medallions representing all branches of service including the Army, Navy, Marines, National Guard, Air Force, Coast Guard, the Merchant Marine, and POW/MIA's. Furthermore, the memorial and flag will be provided with night time lighting. if there is any money left, it will be donated to the American Legion who is currently trying to replace the cloth flags used in the Avenue of Flags.

The replacement flags will have a fabric that is more tolerant to the weather. This would allow the Avenue of Flags to fly over a period of days rather than one day.

Kevin Turbett (right) and Tim Dunn of Turbett Masonry, place an eagle statue atop the new Veterans Memorial in Oak Hill Cemetery in Tama on Tuesday morning, May 21. The monument, finished just in time for Memorial Day, replaces a 50-year old one in the center of the cemetery which had deteriorated. It was paid for by contributions. The brick is black diamond velour Turbett said.

Anyone interested in replacing a loved one's flag should contact Dave Baier. Again, the Oak Hill Cemetery Association thanks all of you who donated in any way to make the new memorial a reality.
