A portion of the area now owned by Iowa Premium Beef on Tama's east side has been designated an urban renewal area. The company is in the process of reopening the former Iowa Quality Beef- Tama Pack facility which has been shut down since 2004.

City council members voted 5-0 Monday night, May 20, to include about 23 acres of the plant site as an urban renewal area. No objectors were heard to the establishment of the area during a public hearing conducted during the Monday council meeting.

The move can allow for certain property taxes to be collected on the property and set aside to pay for improvements.
