The South Tama/East Marshall girls soccer team hosted Marshalltown on Friday, May 17th. ST/EM started the game with Sam Earley in goal; Sadie Kavalier, Hailee Weiss, Grace Kavalier and Ericka Dunning in defense; Araceli Angel, Kylee Hoskins, Mono Nunez and Kristi Lasley in the mid-field; with Dani Stubbs and Carmen Angel up front.
The game started under sunny skies and warm temperatures, almost a perfect day for soccer. Marshalltown started the game with putting pressure on the ST/EM defense and took advantage of it with a goal in the 4th-minute. Marshalltown got a breakaway and scored the goal. Marshalltown followed up with a second goal at the 14-minute mark. This was a goal that Sam Earley initially stopped, and had stopped, but she did not realize where she was at, and when she knocked it down, she was on the goal line, so when the ball hit the ground, it rolled into the goal for the score.
ST/EM picked up its game and for the next two minutes the game was up and down. Marshalltown had the better chances, but ST/EM did have a couple of shots. Mono Nunez and Araceli Angel had good looks and on frame. But again right at the Marshalltown goalie. Marshalltown added to their lead in the 33-minute mark. And that is the way the half ended with Marshalltown leading 3-0.
The second half was more of the same. Marshalltown controlling the tempo, but ST/EM refusing to go away. Marshalltown scored a goal at the 42nd-minute mark and 53-minute mark for a 5-0 lead, and that is the way the game ended, with Marshalltown taking a 5-0 win. Grace Kavalier had a shot on a free kick that was on frame but again right to the goalie. Mona again had a good look but again to no avail.
The ST/EM team played hard, but on this evening the experience and depth of Marshalltown was too much. Dani Stubbs playing forward has been a positive move for the team, as she has started to generate chances for the team. Mona Nunez continues to learn the mid-field role and improves from game to game. Araceli Angel plays a solid game. Carmen Angel continues to show improvement every game. Kylee Hoskins play in the mid-field is improving every game.
The defensive line of Sadie Kavalier, Grace Kavalier, Ericka Dunning and Hailee Weiss is a bright spot. They play very well together, and are improving as well. Sam Earley in goal is one of the best spots. On the evening, Sam had 18 saves as well as other play in goal. The subs of Laura Vinke, Maria Fonseca, Hannah Keckler and Socorro Keckler gave valuable minutes to the team, allowing players to get a quick break and back into the game. The team has improved from the start of the season, and it does show. Might not in the score, but in the play on the field.
ST/EM next game was Monday when the team traveled to LaPorte City to take on No. 13 Union at 5:30 p.m. It was JV first followed by the varsity contest.
