An open house to showcase the Tama Water Treatment Plant has been set for Saturday, June 1, by the city council during their regular meeting on Monday night.

The public will be invited to tour the building located just north of the Tama Civic Center.

The plant was enlarged and had new equipment installed three years ago.

Since then more updates have been made.

Mayor Dan Zimmerman said Water Superintendent Kent Campbell "has done a remarkable job" since taking over its operation

John Lloyd, Tama Public Works director, asked council members Monday night to meet in special session to consider a rate increase for water and sewer. The money would be used to supplement capital improvements to the system.

Mayor Zimmerman said he believes a small increase of 50 cents per month would be acceptable. He cautioned residents, particularly the elderly on fixed incomes, might not be in a position to pay a higher amount.

Tama automatically increases water rate two percent each year. Sewer charges are based upon a flat fee plus a formula calculated from water usage.

The council plans to meet on June 24 to further discuss a hike.

In other business Monday the council:

approved supplementing library funds by a total of $1,700 to fund a $3,963 lighting improvement project for the Louise and Lucile Hink Tama Public Library.

approved a Community Development Block Grant housing rehabilitation project for a residence at 1002 Oswego St. Quality Roofing, Marshalltown, was low bidder for the work at a cost of $12,040.

approved the city being a pass through agency for a grant application being made by Enright-Schrader Post 73 Tama American Legion for the purchase of flags for veterans graves.

approved payment of $4,715 to the Region 6 Planning Commission for administration of the housing rehabilitation program in Tama.
