The South Tama County girls tennis team traveled to Aplington on Thursday, May 9 to take on the Falcons in the final regular season meet of the season. STC battled hard, but fell 5-4 to the host school.
Doubles action started things off on a cloudy, dreary night. The No. 1 doubles Team of Emily Martin and Madison Baack put their undefeated record on the line as they matched up with Kellen Koch and Betsy Cordes. The match proved to be a battle of the fittest as it went down to the wire. Martin and Baack nabbed an important win 9-7.
At No. 2 doubles, STC's Tori Appelgate and Regina Balderas faced Haley Schneiderman and McKenzi Everts. Again, the match was quite a tussle as it was pushed to a tiebreaker to decide a winner. Appelgate and Balderas led 4-2 early in the tiebreaker before seeing their opponents roar back for a 7-4 win and a 9-8 (4) match victory.
Aplington-Parkersburg grabbed an early lead in the match at No. 3 doubles. Olivia Ballhagen and Raechel Campbell defeated Caitlin Svacina and Leah Mann by a score of 8-1.
STC junior Emily Martin took on Kellen Koch at No. 1 singles. Koch led early 4-2, but Martin surged back to take control of the match and post a convincing 8-4 win. The win pushed Martin's singles record to 7-1 on the season.
Baack faced Cordes at No. 2 singles. She raced to an early lead and posted an 8-2 victory. Appelgate took to the court at No. 3 singles against Schneiderman. Appelgate posted a 3-2 lead before Schneiderman took control of the match and recorded an 8-3 win.
At No. 4 singles, Balderas locked into a battle with Everts. After trailing 0-3, Balderas steadied herself and evened things at 5-5. The wind played havoc with both players' games, but Everts converted just enough points to win 8-5.
Svacina faced Ballhagen at No. 5 singles. These two played to 6-all before Svacina took control and forged ahead to win 8-6. Junior Taylor Muhlstein played Raechel Campbell at No. 6 singles. Muhlstein led 4-3 before Campbell pulled ahead in route to an 8-5 win.
In junior varsity action, STC and Aplington-Parkersburg tied 2-2. South Tama's Ali Vavra and Mollie Morgan and Sydney Meek and Jessica Schuur posted a win in doubles.
