STC Middle School teams win pair of NICL crowns

South Tama Middle School hosted the North Iowa Cedar League West Division track and field meet on Tuesday and the Trojans came away with great results.

Two STC teams finished the meet as conference champs, while another finished runner-up and the last one placed fourth. South Tama's eighth grade girls and seventh grade boys won the NICL championships on Tuesday. The eighth grade girls ran away with the meet, scoring 141 points and winning by 50 team points over AGWSR, who finished second.

"The girls did an amazing job as a team scoring in every event," eighth grade girls coach Tiffany Thiessen said. "Many girls set personal records and peaked at the correct time. Congrats on a great end to the season."

On the seventh grade boys side, South Tama held off three teams who were within 15 points of the Trojans. STC scored 106 team points to win the title.

"I am very proud of the seventh grade squad," seventh grade boys coach James Hall said. "Many turned in their best performances last night at the conference meet. I know from talking with coach (Levi) Hunerdosse that he is looking forward to developing this squad to be even better next year as eighth graders."

South Tama's seventh grade girls finished runner-up to West Marshall, who scored 111 points. STC just narrowly finished second with 107 team points after leading the meet midway through Tuesday.

"I am very proud of how the girls finished the season," seventh grade girls coach Abby Gard said. "The girls improved in both form and speed throughout the course of the season and several had a PR in their events at the conference meet."

The STC eighth grade boys placed fourth at the meet. Grundy Center and AGWSR tied for the title with 98 points, while Gladbrook-Reinbeck placed third with 79 and South Tama had 78 team points.

"I was very happy with our performances on Tuesday night," eighth grade boys coach Levi Hunerdosse said. "When you are running and jumping and throwing your personal records come conference meet time, you have to be pleased with that. I look forward to watching these guys compete at the high school level in all sports in the next four years."

South Tama's teams won many events and placed high in a lot more at the meet. The seventh grade girls won two relays (4x800 and sprint medley) and the 100-meter dash. Stephanie Slaven won the 100, placed second in the 200-meter dash, won the long jump and helped the sprint medley win its race. The Lady Trojans also finished runner-up in the shuttle hurdle relay, 4x200-meter relay, 4x100-meter relay and discus.

The STC eighth grade girls racked up points all over the meet. The Trojans won three of the four field events, three relays and one individual running event. Shae Slaven won the long jump, Sabrina Holtz won the discus and Serena Lowe won the shot put for the Lady Trojans. Lauren Yuska also won the 100-meter hurdles. The Lady Trojans won the 4x800-meter relay, shuttle hurdle relay and the 4x100-meter relay.

South Tama's seventh grade boys won three events and placed high in many others. The Trojans won the shuttle hurdle relay, 4x200 relay and 4x100 relay en route to winning the meet.

On the eighth grade boys side, Riley Davenport led the Trojans. He won the high jump, leaping 5 feet, 8 inches, placed second in the 200-meter hurdles, finished second in the 400-meter dash and placed runner-up in the 800-meter run.
