Despite limited practices and time to improve on the small things, the South Tama County girls golf squad continues to improve as the season draws to a close.
The Trojans hosted Grundy Center and Gladbrook-Reinbeck last Tuesday in a home triangular. Grundy Center won the meet with a team score of 186, while the Trojans finished runner-up as they posted a team score of 200. Gladbrook-Reinbeck scored a 237 to take third.
STC junior Paige Van Dyk once again led all golfers. Van Dyk shot a 40 on the nine-hole Tama-Toledo Country Club course after beginning the round with three-straight bogeys. Grundy Center's Josie McMartin finished runner-up with a score of 43.
"She's a little frustrated with some parts of her game," Boles said of Van Dyk. "Practice will help. We just haven't done that. She puts a lot of pressure on herself to do well, too."
The next three lowest STC scores came from Carrie Cibula (48), Laurel Scharnweber (54) and Elysiana Gonzalez (58).
"We're improving our team score each and every week," head coach Kelle Boles said. "We started out in the 220s and then we dropped to 204 last night. Then we shot 200 tonight. Elysiana went down 10 strokes tonight, which helps tremendously. Carrie just had one bad hole, so if she would have shot her 44 like last night, we'd be under 200. Each week they're getting better without practice. We either play a meet or nothing. The weather is killing us."
The Trojans traveled to Conrad on Monday for the North Iowa Cedar League West tournament.
On Monday, the Trojans will be competing in the Class 3A Regional Tournament, hosted by West Marshall, at the Lincoln Valley Golf Course. Other schools competing will be Anamosa, East Marshall, Iowa Falls-Alden, Monticello, South Hardin, Union and West Marshall.
