The South Tama County girls tennis team took its undefeated record to the courts on Friday to face the Grinnell Tigers on an extremely windy day. The Tigers came away with an 8-3 victory. Although the final score looked lopsided, the Trojans had their chances in several matches to make things much closer.
Emily Martin faced Grinnell's Lily Hamilton at No. 1 singles. These two matched each other shot for shot throughout the match with several rallies going more than ten strokes each. Hamilton's consistency proved to be the difference as she posted a 10-4 win. STC's Madison Baack matched up against Jackie Johnson at No. 2 singles. These two battled to 8-8 before Johnson moved ahead 9-8. Baack fought valiantly but went down 10-8.
Tori Appelgate continued her win streak at No. 3 singles. She took on Grinnell's Liz Nelson. Appelgate continued to impose herself at the net in this match. It proved to be too much for Nelson as Appelgate recorded a 10-4 victory for STC. Regina Balderas attempted a comeback for the ages in her match with Caprisse Honsbruch at No. 4 singles. Honsbruch built a 9-3 lead in the match only to see Balderas storm back to grab five straight games. Honsbruch steadied herself just enough to survive with a 10-8 victory.
Caitlin Svacina struggled with the windy conditions, as well as, her opponent at No. 5 singles. Hope Bush hit angle after angle at Svacina throughout the match. She surged to a 10-3 win for the Tigers. Taylor Muhlstein built an early lead against Hannah Whitney at No. 6 singles. Whitney pushed back to even things at 10-10 and force a tiebreaker. Muhlstein improved her backhand and took control of the net to snatch a 7-1 tiebreaker win for STC.
In doubles play, the Tigers dominated things. The No. 2 doubles team of Appelgate and Balderas fell to Johnson/Honsbruch by a 10-5 score. Svacina and Leah Mann dropped a 10-0 decision to Nelson/Whitney at No. 3 doubles. Muhlstein and Natasha Musgrave never found their rhythm in their match with Bush and Ali Brandenburg at No. 4 doubles as were defeated 10-4. Ali Vavra and Mollie Morgan took to the court at No. 5 doubles against Amaris Bates and T. Herr. The duo from Grinnell outlasted Vavra and Morgan to post a 10-8 victory.
Finally, Martin and Baack turned their disappointment in singles play into joy as they recorded a 10-0 win at No. 1 doubles.
In junior varsity action, STC fell to Grinnell by a score of 5-4. The Trojans got wins in doubles from Sydney Meek and Jessica Schuur, Danialle Taylor and Jennifer Perez, Mackenzie McFate and Danialle Taylor, and Ali Vavra and Megan Mann.
