Heads Up: Concussions in Youth Sports

In July 2011, the Iowa Legislature passed a law to provide uniform standards for athletes in grades 7 through 12 who participating in school sports with regards to concussions and head injuries. Concussions and head injuries are in the news frequently and a current focus with athletic programs from middle school through professional sports. Dr. Jeff Knobloch, physician with Grinnell Family Care, and Tony Gallo, GRMC physical therapist, will be the featured speakers on Monday, May 6, at the Grinnell Regional Medical Center SE*ED program. The program is free and open to the public and held at the Drake Community Library. Social time and refreshments begin by 9:30 a.m. and the lecture runs from 10 to 11 a.m. Knobloch and Gallo will present on the current focus and attention given to head injuries and concussions, with special attention on area high school athletes. Knobloch and Gallo will discuss how the school district and the medical community are staying on the leading edge of concussion treatment and management. Looking forward on the schedule, Mike Pearson of Grinnell and host of IPTVís ìMarket to Marketî will be the speaker on Monday, May 13. Pearson will talk about being an advocate for agriculture. There will be no programs on May 22 or 27, due to Grinnell College commencement and Memorial Day. Parking is available at the Drake Community Library, along Park Street, on Fifth Avenue, and in the First Presbyterian Church parking lot.
