Marshalltown Medical & Surgical Center Board of Trustees announced that John Hughes, interim Chief Executive Officer will serve as the hospital permanent leader starting immediately. Hughes took over as interim CEO after former CEO Brian Burnside stepped out of that role at the end of January of this year.
"Since his arrival as Chief Operating Officer, John has made an immediate impact at MMSC," stated Dr. Terry Briggs, Chairman of MMSC's Board of Trustees.
"Along with his professional experience, John's very personable, a team player and an excellent communicator. He also has experience in healthcare construction projects, which is another element that is very attractive to us." "I am particularly impressed with John's commitment to open communication and cooperative relationships between the hospital and physicians."
"Over the past ten months, it has been a pleasure to work with the employees, physicians and the board of MMSC," said Hughes. "I am honored to have been selected as CEO and look forward to carrying on the hospital's strong tradition as a trusted provider of care in the communities we serve."
Hughes takes the reins during an exciting time in the life of MMSC as it enters into its 100th Anniversary in 2014.
The hospital is also in the midst of discussing a building project, a project that could potentially include new construction and renovation.
"It is a privilege to be involved in shaping this major event in the life of our community hospital and its clinics," said Hughes.
Hughes came to Marshalltown in 2004, as Executive Director of McFarland Clinic, from Fremont Area Medical Center in Fremont, Neb., where he served as the Vice President of Professional Services.
In this position, he assumed responsibility for ancillary services, physician recruitment, strategic planning and business development. While at Fremont, Hughes increased physician satisfaction scores to the 99th percentile, developed and implemented new programs and services. He also led the development of a new cancer center. Before assuming the COO role at MMSC Hughes served as Vice President, Central Operations for Delphi Healthcare Partners, Inc., a nationwide physician staffing and management company.
Hughes earned a Bachelor of Health Science and a Master's Degree in Healthcare Administration from University of Missouri, Columbia.
He is also a Fellow of the American College of Healthcare Executives and serves as a board member for numerous local charitable and civic organizations.
