The South Tama/East Marshall girls soccer team traveled to Maxwell to take on CMB last Tuesday for a 5:30 p.m. kickoff. ST/EM started the game with Sam Earley in goal; Sadie Kavalier, Hailee Weiss, Grace Kavalier and Cynthia Lares in defense; Araceli Angel, Guadalupe (Mona) Nunez, Megan Wanatee and Danni Stubbs in the mid-field; with Kristi Lasley and Ericka Dunning up front. The game last week was a varsity-only contest.
ST/EM started the game hard and it showed. ST/EM controlled the tempo from the opening kick-off. We were winning the 50-50 balls and were playing in the CMB end of the field. ST/EM first chance to score came off a corner. The ball was played in by Araceli Angel and was like a ping pong ball, but CMB kept it from going in.
CMB had a good counter-attack, but the ST/EM defense kept from anything developing. ST/EM again pushed into the CMB end, with Wanatee firing a good shot, but the CMB goalie kept it from going on. And this was the story of the first half. ST/EM controlling the ball, but not finding the back of the net. And this was the way the half ended with the score 0-0.
The second half found CMB being more aggressive, and it controlled the flow for the first five minutes of the second half, but the ST/EM mid-field play and the defense shut down the attacks, and slowly ST/EM team took control of the game again. Stubbs had a couple of good shots, but again the CMB keeper was in the right spot to stop anything. Nunez had a hard shot but again nothing to show for it. Angel had good shots, but again were denied. Wanatee also tried her luck, but again was turned away.
In the 68th-minute, CMB was awarded a free kick. On a set piece, a shot was taken from just outside the goal area that floated into the goal area. Sam Earley, the ST/EM goalie tried to punch the ball over the net, but it did not make it and fell behind her rolling into the goal before she could recover. CMB took a 1-0 at that point.
Hannah Kecker came into the game to play goalie the last 10 minutes, to allow Earley to play the field. And for the final 10 minutes the game was played in from of the CMB goal, but to no avail. Earley had a good shot on goal, as did Wanatee, Stubbs and Dunning. This is the way the game ended with CMB winning a hard fought contest 1-0.
The team played hard and did all the right things tonight. They outshot CMB 18 to 13, with 11 shots on goal to 8 for CBM. Corners were even with two each. ST/EM controlled the game for the most part, and played very well. ST/EM team played well enough to win, but was not to be this evening. I was very proud of the team and the effort they gave. They never gave up, and will build on this for the upcoming games.
